Course code: ΜΒ01 – Understanding of the field of respiratory failure and the principles of mechanical ventilation
– Understanding of mechanical ventilation waveforms, their practical value and their application in clinical practice
– Acquire the knowledge necessary for the early recognition of indications for the use of mechanical ventilation in various situations
– Understanding of the basic models of mechanical ventilation
– Understanding of enema models of mechanical ventilation and gas exchange systems
– Acquire knowledge of non-invasive mechanical ventilation
– Acquire basic knowledge of ventilator handling
– Acquire knowledge to solve common mechanical ventilation problems
– Weaning from mechanical ventilation

Semester: 2nd – Historical data – Criteria for use – Basic physiology – key variables of MA
– How the ventilator works – basic variables of MA
– Mechanical ventilation models and common models in rehabilitation centres
– Fluid administration in MA
– MA during and immediately after CPR
– Heart-lung interaction in spontaneous and mechanical ventilation
– Breathing Volume
– PEEP – what it is and how to choose its level – problems related to its level
– Non-invasive ventilation – HFOT
– MA and Tracheostomy – what changes, when do I do it/HFOT
– Weaning and common problems in MA (short and chronic) and how to deal with them
– Summary of MA monitoring variables
– PM – Hands on

  Recommended literature to study
  Students are given articles and reviews from the International Bibliography
  Teaching and learning methods
  The module is taught in the form of academic lectures and tutorial exercises and assignments. Some modules use the methods of working groups and real-life problem solving to encourage feedback learning.
  Evaluation/grading methods
  Written exams 70%, Assignment 30%
