The President of FORTH, Prof. Vasilis Charmandaris stated in this regard: "You Technology and Research Foundation, honoring the memory, the offering and the sacrifice of Vasilis Xanthopoulos , and Stefanos Pnevmatikos –Professors of the University of Crete and members of FORTH, who were murdered in Heraklion on November 27, 1990 during a seminar– established the Award for Outstanding University Teaching in their memory. Since 1991, the Award has been awarded annually to distinguished academics, selected by a Committee with a broad scientific background.».

For 2026, proposals that fall within the thematic circle of are accepted Life Sciences.

The deadline is Tuesday, 30 JunJune 2026.

The President of the Award Committee, Prof. Yannis Ioannidis states in this regard: "Excellent teaching at the university inspires, leads to research and shapes ethos, through a vibrant educational relationship. The Award is a small recognition of the Greek university teacher who does great work despite the less than ideal conditions around him, but also a small tribute to the two bright university teachers whose life thread was cut prematurely at the time of their sacred service.».

The award is open to faculty members of Greek universities, specialist scientists and other teaching staff, members of research centers with university teaching work, as well as those who have previously held any of the above positions (e.g., emeritus professors). The award, however, is only awarded to living individuals.

Nominations are submitted by a person or persons (e.g., teachers or students) who are familiar with the teaching work of the nominees. It is desirable to include a letter (or letters if it is a group proposal) justifying why the specific individual is suitable to receive the award.
