Teaching Method: a) The theory of the course is available in the form of recorded lectures in the e-class of the course. These lectures fully cover all the material of the course and focus on what the student should know. Based on these lectures, which are primarily based on the syllabus given to the students, the course exams will be held.

B) The clinical exercise which is 14 2 hours will be done in small groups of 5 people. These groups will also do clinical exercises outside the morning hours in order to ensure the quality of the clinical exercises, which is completely dependent on the number of participating students.

C) The lessons from the auditorium are a total of 14 2 hours. Of these 10 2 hours are compulsory. The purpose of these courses will be the presentation of cases and differential diagnosis with interactive discussion with the students.

Evaluation Method: Written final exam, of graded difficulty, including multiple choice questions based on the lessons posted in the e-class.

Objective Objectives/Desired Results: The general purpose of the course is the theoretical and practical training of medical students in the field of Pediatrics, providing students with basic knowledge of this field, regardless of the future specialization that each doctor will have.

The specific objectives of the course are specialized in the following intended learning outcomes:

  • Learning how to take and write a pediatric history
  • Conducting a comprehensive physical examination across the entire age spectrum of pediatrics
  • Evaluation of common symptoms that have basic pediatric diseases
  • Evaluation of laboratory and imaging tests
  • Ability of diagnostic approach and differential diagnosis

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to to use the acquired knowledge in order to:

  • be able to obtain a detailed pediatric history
  • have the ability to comprehensively present the medical history
  • have the ability to perform a physical examination on pediatric patients of all ages
  • to have the ability to synthesize and analyze information for the purpose of differential diagnosis
  • to make use of classic and new diagnostic methods
  • to select the clinical laboratory test required for the patient's diagnostic approach
  • to be able to evaluate the outcome course of the disease

Course Description:

Course Description / Content: Thematic modules included are:

• Growth and Development. Normal growth and development of the child as well as their disorders and the evaluation of the child with special needs.
• Pediatric Nutritional Status and Nutritional Disorders. Normal Infant, Normal Child and Adolescent Diet, Obesity, Pediatric Malnutrition and Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies
• Acutely ill or injured child. Poisonings
• Genetics and dysmorphology. Types of inheritance, genetic evaluation, chromosomal disorders and dysmorphic child approach
• Metabolic disorders. Disorders of carbohydrates and amino acids
• Fetal Medicine and Neonatology. Maternal, fetal and neonatal assessment, maternal diseases affecting the neonate, fetal diseases, neonatal respiratory diseases, anemia and hyperbilirubinemia, necrotizing enterocolitis, hypoxemic ischemic encephalopathy, intracranial hemorrhage and convulsions, sepsis and meningitis, congenital infections
• Adolescent Medicine. Adolescent overview and assessment. Care of adolescent's good health and eating disorders.
• Immunology. Immunological assessment, lymphocyte disorders, neutrophil disorders, complement system.
• Allergy. Classification of allergy, asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis, seronosis, insect allergies, adverse reactions to foods and drugs
• Infectious diseases. Vaccinations and prophylaxis
• Digestive system. Assessment of digestive system, oral cavity, esophagus and stomach, intestinal tract, liver diseases
• Respiratory system. Respiratory system assessment, breathing control, upper airway obstruction, lower airways, parenchymal and pulmonary vascular disease, cystic fibrosis, chest wall and pleura
• Cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular evaluation, syncope, chest pain, arrhythmias, acyanotic and cyanotic congenital heart disease, heart failure, rheumatic fever, cardiomyopathies and pericarditis
• Orthopedics. Orthopedic assessment, fractures, hip, lower extremity and knee and lower leg
• Dermatology. Dermatological assessment, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, pigmented lesions, vascular abnormalities, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis
