Objective Objectives/Desired Results:
  • Understanding of the basic principles and situations related to the patient with acute abdomen. Acute abdomen is one of the most common causes of emergency department visits with multiple etiologies
  • Assessment and diagnosis: The acquisition of skill in the synthesis of information from the history and clinical examination for the appropriate indicated diagnostic approach of the patient, according to international guidelines but also depending on the existing means
  • Management – Prioritization in the initial assessment and management of a patient with acute abdomen – Collaboration with other specialties

—————————————————
MEDICAL STUDENTS TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE COMPLEXITY OF THE DIAGNOSIS OF ACUTE ABDOMEN NOT ONLY OF SURGICAL ETIOLOGY – A VERY COMMON ENTITY EVENTUALLY LIFE THREATENING IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
THE AIM IS TO HELP MEDICAL STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL THINKING AND CLINICAL JUDGMENT, ACCORDING TO THE PRESENTING SYMPTOMS.

  • ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS ACCORDING TO PRESENTATION (SITE, SYMPTOMS, MEDICAL HISTORY)
  • INDICATED DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES AND DIAGNOSTIC MODALITIES TO AID THE CORRECT DIAGNOSIS.
  • ALGORITHMS AND QUIDLINES FOR INITIAL PATIENT MANAGEMENT

General Skills

The course aims to:

  • To help students apply the knowledge they acquire from theoretical courses to the patient and especially to the patient's diagnostic approach
  • Students are assisted in developing their critical medical thinking and diagnostic skills
  • Students are trained to interpret the clinical picture, laboratory and imaging tests in order to arrive at a diagnosis
  • In addition to the theoretical material, the student is trained by simulation on real clinical situations as well as on the bed
  • Training in the diagnostic approach, in the appropriate prioritization in the management of patients and in seeking consultation from the appropriate specialty in accordance with international guidelines and according to existing means
