Evaluation Method: – Writing and oral presentation of work The evaluation criteria are accessible by the students. Attendance at classes is mandatory. The score will be calculated according to the performance of each student in the presentation and writing of the paper.

Objective Objectives/Desired Results: The purpose of the course is to acquaint medical students with the recognition, understanding and treatment of mental pathology in children and adolescents.

The course begins with a description of the subject of Child Psychiatry and the operation of the Child Psychiatry team. The diagnostic assessment of the child, the use of play and painting as diagnostic tools and the classification of childhood mental disorders are described. Clinical entities are listed according to the latest taxonomic principles and are divided into neuro-developmental, psychosomatic, emotional and behavioral disorders. The clinical picture, epidemiology data, etiology, prognosis and treatment methods are given. The interdependence and interaction of the biological, psychological and psychosocial causes for the manifestation of each disorder is emphasized. Finally, the child psychiatric service structures and the preventive and therapeutic interventions they provide are described, with particular reference to psychotherapies and pharmacotherapy. The main purpose of the educational subject is to recognize the mental disorders of childhood and adolescence and to become familiar with the way child psychiatrists work. At the end of the training medical students will be able to recognize the basic clinical pictures of child and adolescent psychopathology and the necessity of referring children to child psychiatric services.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • to use his knowledge to recognize and differentially diagnose the main mental disorders of children and adolescents.
  • to know and be familiar with the way Child Psychiatrists work and to recognize the necessity of referring minors to Child Psychiatry services
  • to approach children and adolescents with mental health problems to organize and present independent scientific work

Unit 1: Introduction to Child Psychiatry: definition, historical development, the object of Child Psychiatry, the normal and the pathological in the child's mental health, Interdisciplinary P/ps Group

Unit 2: Diagnostic assessment, classification in Child psychiatry: Child psychiatry examination, the Game, Drawing, classification in child psychiatry

Module 3: Neurodevelopmental Disorders I: Speech and Language Disorders and Psychological Effects, Specific Developmental Disorders of Motor Function, Written Language, Learning Disorders Developmental Issues of Children with Chronic Conditions & Treatments: (Prematurity, Prenatal Effects, Chromosomal and Genetic Disorders, Metabolic Disorders, Infections, Neurological Problems, Sensory Deprivation, Other)

Module 4: Neurodevelopmental Disorders II: Mental Retardation, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Unit 5: Psychosomatic disorders of childhood: Psychosomatic problems, eating disorders (anorexia – bulimia), sleep disorders, the child facing illness

Unit 6: Anxiety-phobic disorders- obsessive-compulsive disorder: Anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood fears – School phobia, selective mutism, obsessive-compulsive disorder

Unit 7: Emotional disorders: Depression, dysthymia, suicidal behavior in children and adolescents, self-harm in adolescence
