THE SUBMISSION OF CANDIDATES FOR THE GREEK AWARDS

L'ORÉAL-Unesco FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE 2024, START!

For 13or for the first time the institution that supports young women scientists announces 3 Scientific Research awards with a total value of €30,000

Athens, February 13, 2024 – With the springboard of the opinion that "the world needs science and science needs women", h L'Oréal Hellas in collaboration with the Greek National Commission for UNESCO, announces the start of nominations for the 13a Greek Awards. Once again, the Program aspires to highlight 3 female scientists, which are distinguished for their work in the fields of Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, contributing decisively to the advancement of scientific knowledge and through their research positively influencing the field in which they pursue a career. As a small token of recognition of their great work, each female scientist who will be distinguished will be given a prize of €10,000.

The L'ORÉAL – UNESCO Greek Awards are part of L'ORÉAL-UNESCO International Program For Women in Science and they are an integral part of the great effort that is being made all over the world, to limit the perception that the field of scientific research is a field in which men are distinguished. So, despite the fact that 33.3%[1] of researchers worldwide are women and only 11%[2] of them occupy top academic positions in Europe, the Program is looking for female scientists and researchers who, through their discoveries, are truly changing the world and are role models for the younger generations of women, who are inspired to participate in tackling the great challenges facing humanity.

Since the launch of the L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Programme, 4,100 women scientists in 118 countries have been distinguished. It is worth noting that two winners of the International Prize received the Nobel Prize in 2023. In particular, Professor Katalin Karikó, L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science winner in 2022, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Professor Anne L'Huillier, winner of the L'Oréal-UNESCO International Prize for Women in Science in 2011, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Through the L'ORÉAL – UNESCO Greek Awards, young Greek scientists are supported and encouraged to continue their research and highlight the value of their scientific field in their country.

Aikaterini Tzitzikosta, President of the Greek National Committee for the UNESCO, stated: "The institution of the "L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Women in Science" Awards makes us particularly proud, as it practically recognizes the important scientific work of young researchers and distinguished scientists. At a time when women scientists continue to be under-represented in the field of Research, it is very important to offer them supplies and resources that will make them equally competitive in the scientific community. The Greek women scientists who will be awarded in the framework of the L'Oréal-UNESCO Greek Awards will not only be an example and inspiration for young Greek women in order to claim a place in the field of science, but also living proof that their contribution to the field of research contributes the most to a better tomorrow".

Alessandra Dolphins, General Manager of L'Oréal Hellas, stated: "For 26 years, the L'ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science program has been the practical proof that L'Oréal stands by young women who, through their scientific work, are fighting for a better world. As L'Oréal Hellas, we are very proud that, through the Hellenic Program, great Greek women have been distinguished who, with their actions, have contributed to scientific progress, inspiring young scientists to pursue their dreams and achieve the highest goals. We are at the side of every female scientist from the moment she starts her career in a university laboratory and even goes so far as to claim the Nobel Prize."

The winners of the last Greek L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science, in 2022, were Dr. Maroula Kokotou, Assistant Professor in "Instrumental Chemical Analysis and Organic Chemistry" of the General Chemistry laboratory of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition of the Agricultural University of Athens, Dr. Ioanna Keklikoglou, Assistant Professor at the Biology Department of the University of Crete and Dr. Eleni Vergadi, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical School of the University of Crete.
