  • Theory: multiple choice test, true/false questions, short answer questions, oral examination of students with special educational needs

Objective Objectives/Desired Results:

The aim of Forensics-Toxicology course is to introduce students to the basic principles of Forensic Science and Human Toxicology. The course provides students with the essentials to acquire skills about external examination of the corpse and the basic autopsy approach, including calculation of the time elapsed since death and preliminary investigation of death cause.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to use the acquired knowledge to:

  • Understanding of basic concepts of Forensics
  • Obtaining knowledge of Forensic Methodology, as well as legal and ethical principles of Medicine practice
  • Familiarization with basic postmortem changes
  • Understanding and use of forensic terminology
  • Analysis and presentation of cause(s) of death and morphological degeneration observed on the human body
  • Communication and cooperation with fellow students for research projects and student conference participations

The Pathology Laboratory organizes courses, workshops, post-educational meetings and actively participates in research and conferences aimed at:

  • Promotion of knowledge and medical ethics, with rules of ethics, which serve the recent needs of the student-future doctor as well as society needs.
  • Promotion of knowledge and research, within a free academic environment, aiming at the highest quality educational level.
  • High-level research, published in contemporary highly prestigious scientific Journals.
  • Education of students, in order to understand the modern medical thought, the way research is conducted, theories and methodological approaches related to morphology of human body tissues and the multistage process of carcinogenesis.

The goal is the preparation of students, capable of further continuing their studies within our university as well as their successful careers.

Course Description:

 Module 1

Subject of Forensics and Forensic Methodology. Legal and Ethical Principles in the Practice of Medicine

Module 2

About death: Postmortem phenomena- time of death. Identification of a deceased person. Death certificate.

Module 3

Sudden deaths. Neonatal and infant deaths. Violent “deprivation” deaths. Drowning. Suffocation.

Module 4

Lesions caused by mechanical factors effect: crushing injuries, head injuries, gunshot injuries, road traffic accidents.

Module 5

Lesions caused by natural factors influence such as heat, electric current, radiation damage.

Module 6

Injuries caused by chemical agents.

Module 7

Child homicide. The abused child syndrome.

Module 8

Death by drugs

Module 9

Occupational accidents

Module 10

Sexual crimes and crimes of sexual and financial abuse, body injury.

Module 11

Artificial pregnancy termination. Pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium. 

Modules 12-13

Molecular Forensics, genetic imprint, DNA imprints in civil and penal code, difficulties and limitations, methodology and analysis of molecular findings, examples.
